I slowed my hurried steps, imagining that time might slow with me, and that I could better savor each chapter of life. Yet time continued like flowing water, neither rushing nor lingering. The earth kept turning in silence, carrying us into another journey around the sun.
So much changes without announcement. Whether we welcome it or not, nothing truly stands still. If we reach out to seize the play of light in the air, what remains in our hands may be nothing more—and nothing less—than the quiet conviction held within the heart.
We have named countless festivals in an attempt to remember the luminous moments of history. For those of us living now, perhaps the simplest joy is the brief peace a holiday brings. We may not fully feel the meaning once held by those days; perhaps those who came before us never wished to leave behind too much sorrow. Yet if we can share a smile today, then something of that distant meaning has already been carried forward.
As the bells of the new year sound, may everyone cross the difficult passes of life and grow into a better self.
