Over mountains and across rivers, my shadow has wandered deeper and deeper into the years. When I turn back by chance, the road behind me has already vanished into dust, nowhere to be found. Only when I lift my eyes toward the distance do I understand: between one glance down and the next glance up, everything has passed like an old dream. I grew up in unknowing, then quietly understood something in a moment without sound.
Now, having crossed one hardship after another and passed through the attachments long lodged within me, the love and hatred I once bore toward this world have at last become foam upon water, gathering and scattering with the wind. Little by little, I have stopped asking what else I might gain. Along the way, I have already found what is most precious: peace. Everything else is only dust upon the journey; there is no need to carry each grain in the heart.
Many people seek awakening, yet may not know what awakening truly is. Just as all beings are nourished by heaven and earth, we so often forget to look up at them with gratitude.
In truth, awakening has never been as distant or mysterious as we imagine. The closer we come to the Way, the simpler the world appears. Perhaps a new life has already begun when the heart grows spacious enough to hold a sky full of stars—when joy, anger, sorrow, and delight are no longer enemies to be driven away, but companions walking playfully at our side.
Then every person we meet will have a reason for arriving, and everything we endure will find its own tender resting place. The flower blooming before us will be the loveliest form this moment could take.
May you and I, amid the ten thousand disturbances of the world, keep a heart both lucid and at peace.
